Plight of the Horses
The plight of the the Comstock Wild Horses reflects a crisis of 21st century
progress and the vanishing west.
Nevada is one of the fastest growing states in the nation. Homes are being
built above the 6,200-foot level where these horses roam, pushing them
further back into the mountains or forcing them to graze in populated areas
where automobiles kill or maim dozens of them yearly. There are other
dangers as well. In December 1998, three young men slaughtered 33 of these
gentle horses for target practice. This brought the horse's plight into the
national limelight and, at last, concerned citizens are coming forth to help.
The Let 'em Run Foundation is working with other organizations to set aside
protected tracts of land for these horses, to help manage the herds and to
fence off areas where they should not roam. Our dream is to create the
"Comstock Wild Horse Sanctuary" where these horses, and all wildlife can be
preserved, protected and allowed to run free for our children and our
children's children.

Mary McCaslin, Singer / Songwriter
Mary McCaslin represents an unbroken link between traditional American
folksingers and today's "new folk" singer-songwriters. Known for her songs
about the West, its landscape, and its outlaws as well as her insightful
songs about relationships, Mary has influenced countless other performers.
For many years before her current solo career, Mary toured with legendary
singer Jim Ringer. Together they helped keep folk music on the map through
some very lean years.
Mary was a pioneer of open tunings, using them long before they gained their
current popularity. In addition to her flawless fingerpicking style on the
guitar, Mary also plays "clawhammer" (style) banjo using it to great (and
unique) effect on such unlikely songs as "Blackbird" and "Pinball Wizard."
These and other personalized arrangements of popular songs have consistently
added to her appeal.
In April of 1994 Philo / Rounder released BROKEN PROMISES (sound), Mary's
first recording of new material since 1980. On this album Mary takes a
striking turn inward and tells her own story. With the release of "Broken
Promises", Mary McCaslin reclaims her place among the most original and
talented singer-songwriters of the folk and acoustic genre.

Santa Cruz music icons team up to benefit Nevada’s wild horses: (6/13/02) One day, about four years ago, a beautiful young wild bay stallion was hit by a car and killed on a road near Virginia City, Nev. It certainly wasn’t an unusual incident. Many wild horses have similarly lost their lives before and since. But this particular stallion did not die in vain. Moments after his death, the horse was found by country singer Lacy J. Dalton, who has worked as an entertainer at Harrah’s in nearby Reno for more than 20 years. [ more ]

Recording helps wild mustangs stay on range: (2/22/00) From her rocky top home in Nevada’s crusty Virginia Range, country music artist Lacy J. Dalton delights in the wild mustangs that wander through her front yard.
"I moved here because I wanted to live where horses run free," she says. I’m a Western kind of girl." It seems totally appropriate that the original "Hillbilly Girl With the Blues" has taken up the plight of the Comstock’s endangered wild horse herd.
